(WORCESTER, MA, December 3, 2024)—Rudolf, Smith, Griffis & Ruggieri, LLP is pleased to announce the confirmation of former Murphy & Rudolf partner Brian E. Murphy as a federal judge to the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts. Murphy was nominated by President Joseph Biden on March 20, 2024 to fill the seat vacated by the Honorable Patti B. Saris, who is retiring from regular active service.

While with the firm, Murphy’s practice focused primarily on representing clients facing criminal charges in both state and federal courts, though he also handled cases for parties in the Worcester Probate and Family Court. He was an experienced trial attorney who litigated both serious felony offenses and more minor misdemeanors. Before starting his own firm that eventually became Murphy & Rudolf (and is now Rudolf, Smith, Griffis & Ruggieri), Murphy was a public defender with the Committee for Public Counsel Services. Given his trial experience and reputation, he was one of the small handful of attorneys in the Commonwealth qualified to be appointed to represent clients facing murder charges.

“Although we will miss having Brian and his insights and expertise here at the firm, we are very excited that he has taken this next step in his career and that the Senate has confirmed him,” commented partner Ben Rudolf. “Brian has always been dedicated to upholding the rights of individuals in our courts, and I am confident that he will take those values with him as he joins the Federal bench in Boston.”
